The advantages of Wikipedia

“Wikipedia is an encyclopedia compiled by the voluntary contributions of hundreds of writers and editors. Anyone can write an article and post it to the Wikipedia; anyone else can come along later and edit the article. It is a kind of open, voluntary, work in progress. As such, it is the most up-to-date encyclopedia you will find” (Lengel, 2006, para.6). With these functions, I agree that Wikipedia is a good stage to create an educational system, to broaden people’s horizon of knowledge, and to provide a studying method.

The first reason to leap on the stage is the educational system. Students will not only study in school, but also absorb knowledge on Wikipedia. School can not provide various expertise of fields, so the site is another social school to fulfill students’ curiosity. Also, it is a world library to provide plenty of resources. For example, when people graduated from school, they can continually advance their education in their professional province. And they can share their knowledge, discuss their opinions, and practice their abilities on the website. “Seven percent of all Internet users now visit the site every day” (Martin, 2008, para.13). Due to the statistics, it has become a social library that builds an educational system for everyone around the world.

With the educational system, people can also broaden their horizon of comprehension. “Literacy in modern society means nor only being able to read a variety of information formats; it means being able to participate in their creation, with Wikipedia serving as the marquee example” (Parry, 2008, para.9). It is a world stage to provide a variety of materials; users can open a new learning chapter to discover different cultural knowledge and aspects. For example, if people do not understand some cultural background or they need more definitions about their research, to explore on the website is the best choice.

The last factor is a new studying method. According to David Parry (2008), the website has enlarged into an abundant resources for basic information on scientific subjects, and people can search for any knowledge from there. Also, it can record the debate and discourse, when users write an article and post it to the Wikipedia. For instance, it has become a interactive activity that continually encourages people to research their expertise or supplement common knowledge. Then, the central advantage is that people can learn what they need by themselves.

To learn knowledge from the Wikipedia is a convenient and useful way. It is an educational website to boost people’s knowledge, to share their efforts, and to encourage study. Although some experts think that it is not professional and correct, I still agree that it channels all resources around the world into a sharing vessel. It is a global library that provides various knowledge of fields.

YouTube Phenomenon-Argument eaasy

How does YouTube make a stir over the world? The answer is the video sharing stage on the Internet. Due to the advance of technology in the 21st century, digital industries are paving a rapid way to channel all countries into a village globe. In the well-developed period, YouTube creates “a video sharing website where users can upload, view and share video clips” (Wikipedia, 2005, para.1). Registered users can not only watch videos on the site, but also embed homemade videos to share over the world. With the popularity around the world, YouTube is also building an instant vessel to provide influential effects on the Internet. Following the powerful resources, meanwhile, it opens the disadvantages that cause a far-reaching cultural impact, becomes a helper to express the violent behavior, and infringes the copyright.

The first disadvantage to leap on the stage is the cultural effects. In “Governments target internet-phenomenon YouTube” the author states that since it was launched in 2005, the website has already been forbidden by a number of countries, among them China, Iran, Pakistan, Turkey, Burma and Brazil (para.7). Those countries, which maintain traditional culture or have communist governments, resist the freedom of speech that destroys that principle. Because Youtube contains various messages, it directly impacts the traditional concept, undermines the foundation of culture, and distorts people’s thought. China, for example, is a typical communist government which controls their citizens by banning critical theories to maintain the traditional authority. Also, if YouTube rapidly launches these provinces which have a strong religious belief, they will not receive the multicultural concept. How do we solve the problem? Following the governments’ policies to reduce the critical and religious content, it seems the best way to bridge the gap between government and culture.

The website, additionally, is an efficient way to spread violent videos over the world. Because there is not considerable verification in the uploading processes, users can easily embed their homemade records on the site. Due to the unsafe management, this disadvantage is boiling to the surface of the globe. With the global popularity, registered users can freely post crime video clips to share on the website. And the influence runs riot across every country. For example, according to E. Wyatt (2006), some U.S. army soldiers posted war videos on YouTube that were related the process of attacking Iraq, then it caused a huge stir around the world. Following this matter, YouTube became the helper to interrupt the peace of world. Besides, there are still many hurtful matters saturated with Internet that extend a number of serious effects to bruise all people, especially children. According to Charkes (2007), four high school students were charged by the Ossining N.Y. police last month, because police relied on a vital piece of evidence from YouTube, in which video images of the crime were posted by one of the teenagers after he used the camera on his cell phone to record the attack. To solve the violent problem, therefore, the responsibilities start by parents setting up reasonable rules concerning what their children can and can’t do online. YouTube, also, must strengthen the procedures forembedding contents and set serious policies with laws to shrink the number of criminal videos.

The last element, finally, is the copyright, which relates to intellectual property. If people do not recognize this problem, it will diminish the innovation in society. Following the advance of technology, users who upload unauthorized materials on the website are easily unaware of the rightholders’ permission. To prevent future troubles, YouTube signed the deals with some television and record companies to avoid the lawsuit. It also takes a few steps and precautions to educate users who embed any infringing contents on its website. Although YouTube has already made a deal with the main entertaining companies, it is still easy for users to embed sharing video clips, although they can not make sure they did not post infringing works on their blog or site. To solve the unauthorized behavior, the best way is to embed material from official channels, to show by their homemade videos, and offer some commentary or criticism that relates to it. “Many major rightholders, including CBS, have official YouTube channels that allow embedding” (Bailey, 2007, para.7).

Opponents of sharing videos on YouTube claim that it is unfair to ban the website in some countries, because it restricts people from deriving a gallery of multicultural knowledge from the site and losing the wonderful stage to show their ideas. In contrast, the argument does not illustrate the obvious purpose of governments to protect their citizens. When people absorb plentiful knowledge from YouTube, it still contains much pornography to pollute children’s spirituality. For example, there was a high school student who imitated a video on YouTube and participated in sexual abuse with his classmate. Moreover, to express their thought does not always have positive effects, because those contents maybe include critical words to bruise a country’s reputation. In Mexico, a university student made a series of funny videos that related to beliefs of religion, so it made a dent in hurt his country’s reputation. With these factors, YouTube still included some influencing effects.

In conclusion, with the multicultural impact, YouTube rapidly undermines the foundation of traditional culture and thought. With the violent factor, YouTube has become instant accessible to announce violent behavior and pollute children’s spirituality. With the copyright, it has slowly shrunk people’s efforts.

YouTube and Copyright

This article sheds light on the copyright when users upload unauthorized materials on YouTube. Because it is easy to embed sharing video clips on a website, registered users can not make sure they did not post infringing works on their blog or site. Following its overwhelming popularity around the world, YouTube becomes the aim to invite more challenges by its rivals or rightsholders. To prevent future troubles, it signed the deals with some television and record companies to avoid the lawsuit. It also takes a few steps and precautions to educate users who embed any infringing contents on its website. Prevention outweighs prescription. I agree that YouTube should make deals with the entertainment companies to respect the intellectual property, to reduce infringement and to pave a new way in the future market.

Focusing on the copyright is a significant step to lay the foundation of business. Also, an advanced and democratic country follows hard on the heel of respecting copyright. If YouTube does not pay more attention to handling this problem, it will become a complicated matter. Then, it will open the floodgates of lawsuits. After making the contracts with the entertainment companies, for example, the competition from other rivals will shrink. The rightsholders, moreover, will rewarded with respect for their effort.

With the intellectual property, additionally, YouTube legally avoid the impact to diminish the infringement problems. Following the advanced technology, users who upload infringing works on the website are easily unaware of the rightholders’ permission. To take the legal policy, furthermore, it is the best method to fight competitors, to educate people about the right concept and protect the brain-products of creators. For instance, making clear laws and policies by legal process, it will take a precaution to warn users before embedding videos on a website that has the agreement by rightsholders.

If YouTube deals a contract with the entertainment companies and provides obvious infringing rules to its users, it will open a new chapter of business in the future market. How to achieve this? The method is to provide a safe environment on the website where people can freely upload and download the sharing materials. The best way, therefore, is to focus on the copyright. There is no doubt that users who immerse themselves in innocuous websites will expand the market. For example, if YouTube creates more legal room for users so that they will use it comfortably and make a habit, they will introduce it to other potential users and extend the province by multinational effects.

In conclusion, respecting the intellectual property will build a solid foundation for business. To reduce the infringing works, copyright is the suitable way to wipe out YouTube’s worry. To extend a successful way of market, making a deal with the entertainment industry is a well-developed strategy.

The global phenomenon-YouTube

Fan, Kang-Hsin

Mr. Leverett
March 31, 2008

Since YouTube was launched in February 2005, it has been banned by a number of countries such as China, Iran, Pakistan, and so on. Every country has different reasons for banning the site to shield themselves from the influence. In Pakistan, the religion and politics are the central elements to forbid the popular website. In China, they ban any of the audio-visual comment on the Internet that pollutes their mind and thought. In other words, the Chinese government is extremely easer to control the freedom of speech, avoiding people own much theories that destroy their basic principles of management. In Iran, the reason that the government forbids the Web site is the requested page.

In this article, it sheds light on the Internet-phenomenon YouTube. Every country has various reasons and rules to protect their national security from the Internet. The main factors of banning the site are religion and politics. In this way, foreign companies will pay more attention to overcome the impact and to balance the concept of culture. However, I do not agree that the best way is to ban YouTube from their province, because governments need to open more room for freedom for their people. There are three reasons to support my opinions: multicultural society, knowledge, and freedom.

The first to leap on the stage is to be a multicultural society: the first step to communicate with the world. Due to the advanced of technology, all of the countries which exist on the earth are channeled into a small village. If a county can receive diverse culture that comes from different access, it stands for the educational level of citizens. Therefore, YouTube is a suitable vessel. People will learn how to distinguish the difference in culture between themselves and others, to admire the advantages , and to respect the concept of culture. Although using a variety of resources on Internet is a common phenomenon around the world, some countries reject opening the door of advanced civilization.

With the culture, the knowledge that is derived from Internet is also the element to elevate the level of education. Expanding one’s own knowledge is better to begin with surfing on Internet. The Internet world is an abundant reservoir of encyclopedias that contains various fields such as science, architecture, education, finance, and so on. People can learn and supplement their understanding from YouTube, if school does not mention something. In poorer countries, for example, they do not have enough funding for education, library, or teachers. If they can freely employ those resources, knowledge will follow hard on the heel of surfing on Internet.

The last reason is freedom: a central point to advance the level of democracy.A true democracy allows freedom of speech and respects people’ willingness. If government can set a reasonable statement and allow access to release the right to a Web site, it means the country will be a well-developed nation. For instance, freedom stands for the advance of democracy, where citizens can express their theory, derive myriad information from the world, and display their opinions. Therefore, YouTube is a good stage to equal with the freedom of speech.

With the YouTube, people will broaden the horizon of International culture to become a multicultural society. With YouTube, people can easily absorb abundant knowledge to elevate the level of education. With the YouTube, people can freely express their theory to open a new chapter of democratic society. Following those significant ingredients, YouTube has become a suitable vessel to arrive at the goal.

What is the Controversy in the summit?

What has been generalized in this article is the controversy of expanding Internet access around the world: a crucial summit takes place in Tunis. It reveals that bridges the gap of technology between rich and poor nations; however, the central problem is little funding. To elevate the technology and knowledge would evolve all countries into internationally-agreed development goals. How to balance the human rights and freedom of expression in a global information society ,additionally, is the central point of thesummit. It is also difficult to practice in China, because the government is interested in sheltering state security from criminal acts.

In the article, it is a well-developed policy to help poorer countries benefit from information and communication technologies. If there is abundant funding, it will open the floodgates of advantages: knowledge, communication, and freedom.

The first advantage to leap on the stage is the knowledge: a key to unlocking the door of study. People can broaden their horizon to derive knowledge from the Internet, and the quality of study will follow hard on the heel of technology. In other words, the development of technology lays the foundation of information on the education.

Following the knowledge, furthermore, poorer countries can build the communication access in the globe, shrinking the gap between rich and poor nations. To cast the Internet society is necessary to expand a country’s reputation, although it requires lots of funding to support. Also, people will be saturated with various resources to pool their abilities, to advance professional skills, and to change different opinions.

The last advantage is freedom: nothing can be placed on the same parity. It means the country will open a new chapter to build a freedom of speech society. To arrive at the goal, however, there are still many problems such as criminal acts, human rights, and management. If country is not prepared, it will cause a far-reaching impact to bruise themselves with freedom of speech.

In conclusion, to develop the technology all around the world is a huge task. It relates various elements to reach the goal. If there is enough funding, it will develop quickly.
